  • Purple globes on strong stems
  • Flowers in May and June
  • About 90–110 cm tall
  • Tolerates more partial shade than many alliums
  • 20 bulbs for a generous group

Allium hollandicum, often sold as 'Aflatunense', is one of the most reliable ornamental onions. Soft purple flower globes stand on strong stems above fresh green foliage in May and June. It tolerates a little more shade than many other alliums and fits in almost anywhere.

About this variety

This allium is a proven garden classic. Its round, rather loose flower heads made of many purple stars look soft and light. The foliage is a strong, light green and healthy. With 20 bulbs you can plant a whole group at once, bringing colour and height in late spring.

At about 90–110 cm tall, it belongs in the middle of the border. It goes well with peonies, irises, lavender, sage and roses, as well as hostas, whose leaves later hide the dying foliage. In natural plantings it can even stand in longer grass. It also makes a lovely sequence with late tulips.

Bees and bumblebees visit the flowers in droves in May and June. The stems are sturdy and good for the vase. After flowering, seed heads form that stay decorative for a long time. The bulbs are hardy and return every year in free-draining spots. Voles and deer usually avoid the bulbs because of their onion smell, which makes this allium a reliable partner for tulip beds at risk.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, about 10–15 cm deep and 15–25 cm apart. Tip upwards, in groups of five to ten. Sun is ideal; light partial shade is tolerated. The soil should be free-draining.

Care

Leave the foliage until it turns yellow so the bulb can build up strength for next year. The seed heads are decorative and can be left standing. In pots, protect from constant wet.
