  • Golden-yellow star flowers, rare among alliums
  • Loose umbels of around 5 cm
  • Flowers in May and June, lightly scented
  • About 25–35 cm tall
  • Forms dense groups over time

Allium moly, the golden garlic, is one of the few yellow-flowering ornamental onions. In May and June loose umbels of golden-yellow stars open above broad, grey-green foliage. At about 25–35 cm tall, it is ideal for the foreground and for naturalising.

About this variety

Yellow is an exception among alliums, and golden garlic shows it especially beautifully. Each umbel consists of many small star-shaped flowers in bright golden yellow. They sit above two broad, grey-green leaves. The plant comes from south-western Europe and has been grown in gardens for centuries.

At about 25–35 cm tall, golden garlic belongs at the front of the border, in the rock garden, under light shrubs or in pots. With a hundred bulbs you can plant larger areas and drifts. Good partners are blue-flowering plants such as catmint, speedwell, grape hyacinths or blue alliums. It also goes well with lady's mantle and hardy geraniums.

Bees and butterflies like to visit the flowers. Short stems suit small, cheerful bouquets. Voles and deer usually avoid the bulbs. In spots that suit it, golden garlic forms dense groups and slowly spreads. It is hardy even at higher altitudes and copes well with drought. A loose carpet of yellow beneath roses is a lovely sight.

Planting

Plant the small bulbs from September to November about 8–10 cm deep, tip upwards. Keep 5–10 cm between them and set them in groups. A sunny spot with free-draining soil is ideal; light partial shade is also tolerated.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow, as the bulb gathers strength from it for next year. The seed heads can stay until autumn. Waterlogging is the greatest enemy, so make sure pots have a drainage hole. After a few years you can lift and divide dense clumps in autumn.
