  • Open, star-shaped heads of around 15 cm
  • Purple with a slightly reddish tone
  • Flowers in May and June, early among the large alliums
  • About 90–110 cm tall
  • Suitable for planting in larger numbers

'Purple Rain' is one of the first large alliums to colour up in spring. The open, star-shaped heads of around 15 cm glow in a rich purple with a slightly reddish tone. At about 90–110 cm tall, the 25 bulbs can be planted generously.

About this variety

The heads of 'Purple Rain' are not dense and closed but loose like a small firework. The individual star flowers have a slightly darker eye and a fine sheen. Compared with the well-known 'Purple Sensation', the colour is a little redder and the plant a little taller. It colours up early and opens the allium season.

At about 90–110 cm tall, 'Purple Rain' belongs in the middle or back of the border. Twenty-five bulbs are enough for several groups or a ribbon running through the border. Good partners are late tulips, euphorbia, hardy geraniums and peonies. Among grasses in a prairie border it looks particularly natural.

Bees and bumblebees visit the flowers in large numbers in late spring. As a cut flower the stems last a long time, and the seed heads are attractive when dried. Voles and deer usually avoid the bulbs. The bulbs are hardy at higher altitudes too and flower for many years in a sunny, free-draining spot.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November about 10–15 cm deep, tip upwards. Space them 15–25 cm apart and plant several bulbs together as a group. Choose a sunny spot with free-draining soil.

Care

The foliage often dies back as early as flowering time. Leave it in place all the same until it has fully yellowed, so that the bulb can build up enough reserves. Low perennials planted in front hide the withering leaves. Feeding is hardly necessary; a layer of compost in spring is enough. Divide dense clumps in autumn after a few years.
