Allium schubertii is the firework allium. Its flower heads reach 30 cm and more, and the individual flowers stand on stalks of unequal length, forming an exploding star. The plant itself stays low at about 45–55 cm, which heightens the effect.

About this variety

No other allium looks like Allium schubertii. From a short, sturdy stem a huge, loose flower head unfolds, in which every small lilac-pink star-shaped flower sits on its own stalk of varying length. The result is the shape of an exploding firework. It is a wild species from the eastern Mediterranean.

At about 45–55 cm tall, 'Schubertii' belongs at the front or in the middle of the border, where you can admire the heads up close. It suits gravel gardens, between grasses and next to silvery cushions such as lamb's ears or thyme. It also shows to good effect in a large pot with free-draining compost.

Bees visit the flowers in late spring. After flowering, the heads dry on the stem and remain like a sculpture; they are a sought-after material for dried arrangements. Voles and deer usually avoid the bulbs. A warm, dry position is important; in exposed locations a layer of mulch helps in winter.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November about 10–15 cm deep, with the tip upwards. Keep 25–30 cm between them and set several bulbs together as a group. Choose a warm, sunny spot with free-draining, rather dry soil.

Care

The foliage often dies back as early as flowering time. Still leave it until it has turned completely yellow so the bulb can build up enough reserves. Low perennials in front hide the withered leaves. Feeding is hardly necessary; one dose of compost in spring is enough. Divide dense clumps in autumn after a few years.
