  • Pink flower globes in July and August
  • Dense clumps of flat, grey-green leaves
  • Low, about 20–30 cm tall
  • Tolerates drought and heat
  • Important food for bees in high summer

Allium senescens subsp. montanum flowers in high summer, long after many other alliums are over. Pink globes stand above dense clumps of slightly twisted leaves. An undemanding ground cover for rock gardens, wall tops and border edges.

About this variety

This mountain garlic is native to central Europe, where it grows on rocks and in dry meadows. It does not form individual round bulbs but creeping clumps of flat, grey-green leaves. In high summer, many pink flower globes appear above them on slender stems.

At about 20–30 cm tall, it is made for rock gardens, dry-stone walls, gravel beds and the front row of a perennial border. It likes sun to light shade and free-draining soil. It goes beautifully with thyme, sedum, thrift or blue fescue.

In July and August, when fewer flowers are around, it provides plenty of food for bees and butterflies. The foliage stays attractive for a long time. The clump grows larger over the years and is easy to divide. The plant is very frost-hardy and long-lived. Voles and deer generally avoid it. After flowering, the seed heads remain attractive and give gravel beds structure into autumn without you having to do much.

Planting

Plant this allium in spring from March to May or in September and October. Set it shallow, about 3–5 cm deep, 20–25 cm apart. Free-draining soil without waterlogging is essential, ideally improved with gravel or sand.

Care

Once established, it hardly needs watering. You can cut off faded stems, but the seed heads are pretty too. Cut back the foliage in late winter. Protect plants in pots from constant wet.
