  • Flowers in June and July
  • About 50–70 cm tall, fine stems
  • Naturalises and forms dense groups

Allium sphaerocephalon, the round-headed leek, flowers when most other alliums are over. In June and July its small, egg-shaped heads change from green to wine red, from the top downwards. At about 50–70 cm tall with fine stems, it is ideal for loose, airy planting.

About this variety

Small but effective: the heads of the round-headed leek are only about 3 cm across and egg-shaped. They are green as they open, then turn wine red to reddish purple from the tip down. For a while they carry both colours at once. The fine stems move in the breeze and give the planting a light touch.

At about 50–70 cm tall, it fits beautifully between grasses, in prairie borders, gravel gardens and natural-style meadows. Fifty bulbs can be scattered loosely among perennials. Good partners are coneflower, yarrow, tickseed (Coreopsis) and lavender. It also adds a playful note alongside roses.

Bees and butterflies love the flowers in high summer, and there is a light scent. In the vase the small heads last a long time, and they dry well too. Voles and deer usually avoid the bulbs. In a sunny spot this allium naturalises and over time forms groups with many heads. It is hardy at higher altitudes as well.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November about 8–10 cm deep, tip upwards. Space them 5–10 cm apart and plant several bulbs together as a group. Choose a sunny spot with free-draining soil.

Care

After flowering, leave the foliage until it turns yellow; only then should you remove it. You can leave faded heads as dried decoration or cut them off. Watering is only needed during long dry spells in spring. If the clumps become too dense, divide them in autumn after a few years.
