  • White, double flowers with a hint of cream
  • Slightly wavy petal edges
  • Flowers indoors from January to March
  • About 45–55 cm tall, strong stems
  • 5 bulbs for planting in batches

'Akiko' brings large white flowers on tall, strong stems into the house. The petals have a hint of cream and slightly wavy edges. With five bulbs you can decorate several rooms or plant in batches and enjoy flowers all winter.

About this variety

The white of 'Akiko' is soft and warm, not cool. The flowers look elegant, the edges are slightly wavy and their surface is as smooth as porcelain. They therefore suit colourful as well as simple interiors. The strong, hollow stalk grows astonishingly fast; sometimes you can see the progress almost daily. The flowers open in several directions on the stalk and so look beautiful from every side.

At about 45–55 cm tall, it is ideal for windowsills and tables. Five bulbs in a long trough make an impressive row. Combined with moss, birch twigs or white Christmas roses, it creates a bright winter decoration. If you like, you can also set the bulb in a glass vase with gravel so the roots stay visible. A cover pot in terracotta, zinc or ceramic adds extra style to the arrangement.

The flowers last a long time, in the vase too. Scent and pollinators play no part. Plant the bulbs two or three weeks apart and a new flower will open again and again from January to March. A single bulb also makes a lovely present for hosts during Advent. Trim the stem a little every few days and give it fresh water.

Planting

Pot the bulb between October and January, leaving the top third to half above the soil. The pot should be only slightly larger than the bulb, with a drainage hole and a layer of clay pebbles. A bright, warm windowsill is ideal. Planting in batches extends the flowering period indoors.

Care

Keep the soil slightly moist while it is flowering, but never wet. A cooler spot at night extends the flowering period. Afterwards keep caring for and feeding the foliage, then from August keep it dry and let it rest. As all parts of the plant are toxic, keep the pot out of reach of children and pets.
