  • Two-tone: red above, white with red dots below
  • Flowers about 20 cm across
  • Flowers indoors from December to February
  • About 45–55 cm tall
  • Large bulbs often produce several stalks

'Charisma' shows two faces in one flower: the upper petals are mostly red, the lower ones white with red speckles. The flowers grow about 20 cm across. In winter this amaryllis from the Diamond group brings a strong splash of colour into the house.

About this variety

Hardly any amaryllis looks as lively as 'Charisma'. The red gathers on the upper petals and runs down into a white speckled with red dots. In between lie all the transitions, so every flower looks a little different. Each flower stays in full bloom for a few days before the next one on the stalk takes over. This makes 'Charisma' a plant you enjoy looking at closely.

At about 45–55 cm, the plant stays compact and stands securely in its pot. It suits windowsills and coffee tables and looks best beside simple containers. With white hyacinths or fir sprigs it strikes a festive note. A covering of moss or gravel hides the soil and makes everything look neat. A combination with ivy or small ferns around the edge of the pot also looks lovely.

As a cut flower, 'Charisma' lasts well in the vase, with each bud opening in turn. Do not expect any scent, and pollinators play no part indoors. As a gift for someone who already knows every red amaryllis, it is a good choice. A cool room extends the life of each flower by several days. Cut the stalk when the first bud shows colour, and the rest will open in the vase.

Planting

Pot the bulb between October and January, leaving the top third to half above the soil. The pot should be only slightly larger than the bulb, with a drainage hole and a layer of clay pebbles. A bright, warm windowsill is ideal. Planting in batches extends the flowering period indoors.

Care

Support the stalk with a cane if needed, as the flowers become heavy. After flowering, cut the stalk off just above the bulb but leave the leaves, and keep watering and feeding. From August the bulb needs a rest period without water for the next flowering. Please note: the plant is toxic, keep it away from children and pets.
