  • Double, peony-like flowers
  • Rose red with white tips and edges
  • Flowers about 16 cm across
  • Flowers indoors from January to March
  • About 50–70 cm tall, 4–6 flowers per stalk

'Double Dream' bears lush double flowers reminiscent of peonies. The rose-red petals are randomly edged with white at the tips. As the flowers open, their shape changes from day to day. An amaryllis for anyone with a romantic streak.

About this variety

The petals of 'Double Dream' lie in waves on top of one another until a dense, round flower forms. The base pink is strong; some petals have white tips, others do not. This small irregularity is part of its charm. The strong, hollow stalk grows astonishingly fast; sometimes you can see the progress almost daily. The flowers open in several directions on the stalk and so look beautiful from every side.

In a pot the plant grows about 50–70 cm tall. It looks good on a chest of drawers or on the windowsill, where you can see the double flowers up close. White or pale green amaryllis beside it make the pink look even warmer. If you like, you can also set the bulb in a glass vase with gravel so the roots stay visible. A cover pot in terracotta, zinc or ceramic adds extra style to the arrangement.

The flowers last for weeks, and in the vase too when cut. Allow about ten to twelve weeks from planting to flowering; it often opens only after Christmas. Scent and bees play no part. A single bulb also makes a lovely present for hosts during Advent. Trim the stem a little every few days and give it fresh water.

Planting

Plant the bulb between October and January in fresh potting compost so that a third to half sticks out. Choose a heavy pot that leaves only two to three finger-widths of space all round. Place it somewhere bright and warm, for example at a window above a radiator. Do not water properly again until the bud appears.

Care

Keep the soil slightly moist while it is flowering, but never wet. A cooler spot at night extends the flowering period. Afterwards keep caring for and feeding the foliage, then from August keep it dry and let it rest. As all parts of the plant are toxic, keep the pot out of reach of children and pets.
