  • Pure white with a finely drawn red edge
  • Soft green throat
  • Flowers about 18 cm across
  • Flowers from December to April, depending on planting
  • About 45–55 cm tall

'Picotee' is one of the most elegant amaryllis of all. Its large, pure white flowers are finely edged in red as if drawn with a pen, and a delicate green shimmers in the throat. The variety multiplies slowly and is therefore often in short supply.

About this variety

The appeal of 'Picotee' lies in its restraint. The petals are clear white and look slightly velvety; only the edges carry a narrow red line. Together with the green throat, this creates a clear, uncluttered picture. In the half-light of a winter evening, the colours of 'Picotee' look particularly intense. Each flower stays in full bloom for a few days before the next one on the stalk takes over.

At about 45–55 cm, the plant stays fairly compact. It suits modern and traditional rooms alike, on the windowsill, table or mantelpiece. With white tulips in a vase beside it or red holly, it makes a harmonious winter decoration. A cover pot in terracotta, zinc or ceramic adds extra style to the arrangement. If you like, you can also set the bulb in a glass vase with gravel so the roots stay visible.

As a cut flower 'Picotee' is very popular, and the flowers last a long time in the vase. It has no scent. The bulb is naturally a little smaller than other varieties but flowers reliably. Cut the stalk when the first bud shows colour, and the rest will open in the vase. Over time the bulb forms offsets, which grow into plants of their own.

Planting

Plant between October and January, depending on when you want the flowers. Set the bulb in the soil so that about half stays exposed, in a pot that is barely wider than the bulb. Keep only slightly moist at first. Placed somewhere bright and warm, it will push up its stalk after a few weeks.

Care

After flowering, cut off only the stalk and let the leaves keep growing. Water and feed regularly until summer so the bulb can build up strength. From August it needs a rest period without water in a cool, dark place. All parts of the plant are toxic, so keep it away from children and pets.
