  • Velvety, clear Christmas red
  • Flowers about 20 cm across
  • Often 2–3 stems with 4–6 flowers each
  • Flowers indoors from December to February
  • About 45–55 cm tall

'Red Lion' is the classic red amaryllis for Christmas. Its velvety flowers reach around 20 cm and glow deep red with a light green throat. One bulb often produces two to three stems with several flowers each.

About this variety

Most red amaryllis are measured against 'Red Lion'. Its large funnel-shaped flowers have a velvety surface with a slight satin sheen, and a fresh green glows in the throat. It has been one of the best-selling varieties for decades. Each flower stays in full glory for several days before the next one on the stem takes over. This makes 'Red Lion' a plant you enjoy looking at closely.

At about 45–55 cm tall, it suits any windowsill and the festive table. With fir greenery, cones and gold accents, it becomes a classic Christmas decoration. It is also happy in a frost-free conservatory. A topping of moss or gravel hides the soil and gives a neat look. Ivy or small ferns around the rim of the pot are a nice combination too.

As a cut flower, it brings strong red into the vase in winter. It has no notable scent. About five to eight weeks pass from planting to flowering, so it is easy to time for Christmas. A cool room extends the life of each flower by several days. Cut the stem when the first bud shows colour, and the rest will open in the vase.

Planting

Set the bulb in fresh potting compost from October to January so that a third to half sticks out. Choose a heavy pot that leaves only two to three finger-widths of space all round. Place it somewhere bright and warm, for example at a window above a radiator. Only water properly again once the bud appears.

Care

After flowering, cut off only the stem and let the leaves keep growing. Water and feed regularly until summer so the bulb gathers strength. From August, a rest period without water follows in a cool, dark place. All parts of the plant are poisonous, keep them away from children and pets.
