  • Double flower with narrow, pointed petals
  • Bright red with white flames
  • White, star-shaped centre
  • Flowers indoors in January and February
  • Compact, about 45–55 cm tall

'Splash' looks like fireworks in red and white. The double flowers have narrow, spidery petals in bright red, each with white flames. The white centre shines like a star. An amaryllis with wit and spirit.

About this variety

The petals of 'Splash' stretch outwards and upwards as if splashing. Each is tomato red striped with white, and a pale star forms at the centre. The flowers hold their heads upright and show themselves well. Up close, you keep discovering new details in pattern and colour. In the dark season especially, so much colour in a small space is a treat.

At about 45–55 cm tall, it stays compact and sturdy. It fits in a basket, a bowl or a simple pot on a windowsill or table. Next to plain red or white amaryllis, it makes a cheerful counterpoint. In a cool guest room at 16 to 18 °C, the flowers last longer. It also finds a good place in a conservatory, as long as it stays frost-free.

Cut, it brings energy to the vase. It has no strong scent. About eight to nine weeks pass from planting to flowering, and as a gift for friends it is a surprise. A strip of tape around the end of the stem stops it from curling. A small stake inside the hollow stem stops it from buckling under the weight.

Planting

Plant between October and January, depending on when you want the flowers. Set the bulb in the soil so that about half stays exposed, in a pot barely wider than the bulb. Keep it only slightly moist at first. Placed somewhere bright and warm, it pushes up its stem after a few weeks.

Care

Turn the pot every few days so the stem grows straight. Once flowering is over, leave the foliage, water it into the summer and feed every two weeks. From August, stop watering and give the bulb a rest so that it flowers again in winter. The bulb is poisonous and should be kept out of reach of children and pets.
