  • Anemone-flowered with a pronounced powder puff
  • Soft lilac pink with a golden-yellow centre
  • A ring of reflexed petals
  • Colour deepens as the flowers open
  • About 90–110 cm tall, flowers July to October

'Fenna Baaij' hardly looks like a dahlia. As an anemone-flowered variety, it carries a dense, gold-dusted powder puff in the centre, framed by a ring of soft lilac-pink petals. An unusual variety that attracts bees and garden lovers alike. It flowers from July to October.

About this variety

The flower of 'Fenna Baaij' consists of two parts. On the outside is a simple ring of broad, slightly reflexed petals in soft lilac pink. Inside, a dense cushion of short tubular florets forms a dome, dusted with gold like a powder puff. As it matures, the colour becomes a little stronger. The form is more reminiscent of an anemone than a typical dahlia.

At around 90–110 cm tall, the variety fits well into sunny beds and large containers. Light brown ornamental grasses such as fountain grass or miscanthus form a lovely, natural frame. Together with other dahlias in pink and white it also makes a harmonious group. The flowers reach about 11 cm. With 40–60 cm spacing, each plant has enough room.

The powder puff is very popular with bees and bumblebees. In the vase, the unusual form is a talking point and goes well with grasses and wild flowers. Cut regularly and the plant will flower into October. In autumn, the tubers belong in winter storage. That way you can enjoy it again every year.

Planting

Plant the tubers outdoors from mid-May, after the Ice Saints, 10–15 cm deep, keeping 40–60 cm between them. Starting them indoors is possible from March. Choose a sunny spot with moist, well-drained soil.

Care

Water evenly, without waterlogging. Feed regularly in summer and support the shoots. Remove faded flowers. After the first frost, lift the tubers and store them frost-free, as they are at risk in the ground during a Swiss winter.
