  • Almost black flowers with a dark red undertone
  • Silky sheen on the petals
  • Flowers in July and August
  • About 90–110 cm tall, for sun and partial shade
  • Unscented, a good cut flower for dark bouquets

'Nightrider' is one of the darkest lilies of all. The upward-facing flowers have a silky sheen in blackish red and look almost black depending on the light. If you love contrast in the border or are looking for a special bouquet, this is a variety with plenty of character.

About this variety

Even the buds of 'Nightrider' are dark and glossy. When they open, they reveal a deep blackish red with a silky sheen that looks slightly reddish in the sun and almost black in light shade. The flowers stand upright and are easy to see. It is unscented, which makes it interesting for people who avoid strong lily fragrance.

In the border, 'Nightrider', at about 90–110 cm tall, is a plant for the middle. It comes into its own next to pale partners: cream-white lilies such as 'Netty's Pride', orange daylilies or pale dahlias make the darkness look even deeper. It is also a highlight in a border planted entirely in dark tones. It is only partly suited to pots and develops better in the ground.

In the vase, 'Nightrider' adds an elegant, almost mysterious accent. Combined with white or apricot, it makes a modern bouquet. In the garden, pollinators visit the flowers, and the bulbs return reliably year after year.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November or in spring from February to May. The planting depth is 15–20 cm, about three times the height of the bulb, with 20 cm spacing. A sunny to partially shaded spot with loose, loamy-sandy soil is ideal. Follow the rule 'head in the sun, feet in the shade': low perennials in front shade the root area.

Care

Water thoroughly in dry weeks, without letting water stand. Give some compost or organic fertiliser in spring. Watch out for lily beetle, a red beetle that eats the foliage, and remove it early. Lilies are toxic to cats; this applies to all parts of the plant, the pollen and the vase water. The bulbs are hardy in Switzerland and stay in the ground.
