  • Feathery plumes in soft peach pink
  • Flowers from May to July
  • Compact, about 50–70 cm tall
  • Glossy dark green, fern-like foliage
  • Strong, sturdy stems

'Peach Blossom' is a compact astilbe with dense, feathery plumes in soft peach pink. They glow from May to July above glossy, fern-like foliage and bring a gentle, romantic colour to shady corners. The variety is robust, sturdy and also suits pots.

About this variety

Astilbe 'Peach Blossom' shows an unusually soft shade. Its plumes are pale pink with a hint of peach and look almost like candyfloss. They stand dense and full on strong stems. The glossy, dark green foliage is finely divided and remains an ornament after flowering. The flowers have a pleasant scent.

At about 50–70 cm, 'Peach Blossom' suits the front and middle rows of shade borders, paths under trees and pots. It needs humus-rich soil that stays evenly moist. Lovely partners are ferns, blue-green hostas, heucheras and lungwort. The colour looks best in larger groups or as ground cover under light trees.

The plumes can be cut for small posies and last a few days in a vase. The perennial is hardy even at higher altitudes and returns reliably every spring. Deer and rabbits usually avoid it. It suffers quickly if the soil becomes too dry, so make sure it gets enough water in summer.

Planting

Plant astilbe in spring from March to May, or in autumn in September and October. A partly shaded spot with humus-rich, moist to damp soil is ideal. Make the planting hole twice the size of the root ball and set the shoot buds just below the surface. Space plants 35–50 cm apart and water in thoroughly.

Care

Keep the soil evenly moist, as even short dry spells turn the leaves brown. A mulch of leaves or compost in spring keeps moisture in the soil. Faded plumes can stay standing over winter. Cut back to ground level in spring and divide the clump every three to four years.
