  • Two-tone red: rose-red standards above red-brown falls
  • Strong bronze-orange beard
  • Flowers of about 10 cm, flowering in May and June
  • About 80–100 cm tall, well-branched stems
  • Good for pots and as a cut flower

'Natchez Trace' is a bearded iris in warm shades of red. Lighter rose-red standards stand above velvety, dark red-brown falls, set off by a strong bronze-orange beard. The flowers measure about 10 cm and appear in May and June on well-branched stems.

About this variety

Red is a rare colour in bearded irises, and 'Natchez Trace' shows it in two shades. The falls are dark crimson to red-brown and look like velvet. Above them stand lighter, rose-red standards that close at the top. A dense bronze-orange beard glows in the centre. The variety was introduced in the USA in 1964.

At about 80 to 100 cm tall, 'Natchez Trace' suits the middle of a sunny border. The warm colours harmonise with bronze fennel, orange daylilies and grasses. Blue sage or catmint provide contrast. It also does well in a large pot, provided the compost is free-draining and water does not stand.

The well-branched stems carry many buds, so the plant flowers freely. For the vase, cut stems with one open flower; the remaining buds will follow. Over the years 'Natchez Trace' forms strong clumps that you can divide and spread around the garden.

Planting

Plant the rhizomes ideally from late summer to autumn, from September, or in spring. Set them shallow so that the top remains visible, 25–35 cm apart. A spot in full sun with free-draining loamy or sandy soil is ideal.

Care

Water regularly only until the plant is established; later, water during long dry spells is enough. Feed sparingly in spring with a low-nitrogen fertiliser. Cut faded stems off close to the ground. Do not mulch, and divide every three to four years after flowering. In pots, protect the plant from wet in winter.
