  • Pink and wine-purple flowers with a velvety look
  • Large, wavy flowers with a moderate scent
  • Flowers in May and June
  • About 80–100 cm tall, sturdy stems
  • Good cut flower, hardy even at higher altitudes

'Wine and Roses' is a romantic bearded iris in pink and deep wine purple. The ruffled flowers look almost velvety and have a pleasant scent. In May and June it stands on sturdy stems in the sunny border and goes beautifully with pastel shades and silvery foliage.

About this variety

Rosé and wine – that is the colour play of 'Wine and Roses'. The upper petals are a light pink, the falls a deep, velvety purple, often with fine darker veins. The flowers are ruffled and moderately scented. The exact shade can vary slightly with site and year.

Bearded irises need sun and well-drained soil. At about 80–100 cm tall, 'Wine and Roses' fits in the middle of a perennial border. Combine it with silver-leaved plants such as lavender, cotton lavender or lamb's ears, or with the soft pinks of hardy geraniums and catmint. Next to peonies and columbines in a cottage garden it creates a romantic picture. It is only partly suited to pots.

In the vase its scent fills the house too. Cut the stems when the first bud opens; the others follow. The clumps grow over the years and form fans of sword-shaped leaves that give the border structure even after flowering.

Planting

Bearded irises are best planted from July to September so they root in before winter. Set the rhizome flat on the soil with the top visible; only the roots go into the ground. Keep 25–35 cm between plants. Choose a site in full sun with loamy to sandy, free-draining soil.

Care

Water after planting, later only during long dry spells. Feed sparingly in spring with a low-nitrogen fertiliser. Do not mulch, as the rhizome needs to dry in the sun. Cut faded stems off close to the ground. After three to four years, divide the clumps in summer and they will flower more freely again.
