  • Pure white flower whorls
  • Dark green foliage, fragrant when touched
  • Flowers from July to September
  • About 90–110 cm tall
  • Good cut flower, popular with bees

'Schneewittchen' is a bee balm with pure white flower whorls above dark green foliage. When you brush the leaves, they give off a spicy scent. From July to September it brings bright light to the border. Bees visit it busily, and it lasts well in the vase.

About this variety

White bee balms are rarer than red or pink ones, and 'Schneewittchen' shows why they are worth seeking out. The flower whorls are pure white and look especially crisp against the dark green foliage. Each head consists of many narrow tubes that stand out loosely. The leaves give off a fresh, spicy scent.

A sunny to partially shaded spot with moist, loamy soil is ideal. At about 90–110 cm tall, the variety suits the middle of a border or a cottage garden. White calms strong colours, so it goes well with red bee balms, violet sage or coneflowers. In white gardens it looks elegant next to bugbanes and grasses.

Bees and bumblebees visit the flowers. In the vase 'Schneewittchen' brings lightness to summer bouquets. In late autumn the perennial dies back and reshoots in spring. Divided every few years, it stays vigorous and free-flowering for a long time. A group of three or four plants creates a bright focal point that still glows at dusk, so the variety is well suited to borders near a seating area.

Planting

Plant 'Schneewittchen' in spring from March to May or in autumn in September and October. Set the plant in a hole twice the size of the root ball, with the crown just below the surface. Space plants 35–50 cm apart. A sunny spot with moist soil is ideal. Water in thoroughly.

Care

Water in dry weeks, which also keeps mildew away. Add a little compost in spring. Cut off spent flowers. Divide the clump every three to four years in spring. Cut the old stems back to the ground in late autumn or spring.
