Bleeding heart is a cottage garden classic. From April to June, pink heart-shaped flowers with white tips hang in long rows from arching stems. The perennial brings romance to partially shaded beds and is long-lived and reliable.

About this variety

Lamprocapnos spectabilis, formerly Dicentra spectabilis, is one of the best-loved perennials of old gardens. The flowers are heart-shaped, strong pink, with a white inner tip that hangs out like a drop. They dangle in long rows from the arching stems above the fresh green, finely divided foliage.

Bleeding heart thrives best in light partial shade with moist, humus-rich soil. It suits cottage gardens, woodland edges and shady beds. At about 60–80 cm tall, it is an eye-catcher. Plant hostas, ferns or hardy geraniums beside it to close the gap in summer when the plant dies back.

The flower stems cut well for the vase and bring a spring mood indoors. The perennial lives to a great age and is best left undisturbed in its place. It copes poorly with drought and waterlogging. In spring it reliably reappears, year after year. After flowering the plant often dies back in summer. So plant hostas, ferns or heuchera beside it, whose foliage will later fill the gap. That way the bed stays attractive even in high summer.

Planting

Plant bleeding heart in spring from March to May or in autumn in September and October. Choose a partially shaded spot with humus-rich, moist soil. The planting hole should be twice the size of the root ball; the shoot buds go about 2–3 cm below the surface. Space plants 50–60 cm apart and water in well.

Care

Water regularly in spring and in dry spells, but avoid waterlogging. A dressing of compost in spring is enough. Only cut the foliage off once it has turned yellow after dying back. The sap can irritate the skin and the plant is not edible; wear gloves.
