Calla lily 'Durban' bears flower cups in an elegant violet with a silky sheen. It flowers early in summer and keeps going well into September. A calm, refined variety for modern gardens, pots and bouquets.

About this variety

Violet calla lilies radiate calm and elegance, and 'Durban' shows this with a fine sheen on its cups. The flowers are smooth and funnel-shaped and stand on upright stems. Because it starts in early summer, it has a long season. The foliage is arrow-shaped and green.

At about 50–70 cm tall, it suits borders, border edges and pots. In modern gardens it looks especially good among grasses and clean lines. Yellow calla lilies or tickseed make a lively contrast, white partners a calm one. It also goes well with grey stone surfaces. Several pots on steps or along a path create a calm violet rhythm that gives the garden structure.

In a vase 'Durban' lasts a long time and brings a refined colour to bouquets. It has no scent. Flowering runs from June to September. Five tubers make a full pot or a small group in the border.

Planting

Plant the tubers in pots from March and keep them in a light, warm place so they shoot early. The tubers go 5–10 cm deep with the growing points facing up. After mid-May, when there is no more risk of frost, plant them in the border or move the pots outside. In the border, space them 30–40 cm apart.

Care

Water regularly but avoid waterlogging, and give a liquid feed during flowering. Pull faded stems out from the base. In autumn, when the foliage turns yellow, lift the tubers before the frost, let them dry off and store them dry and frost-free. All parts of the plant are poisonous, so keep it away from children and pets.
