  • Blue star-shaped flowers on dense spikes
  • Selection of Camassia cusickii
  • Flowers in April and May
  • About 70–90 cm tall
  • For moist to damp soils

'Zwanenburg' is a selection of Camassia cusickii with stronger blue flowers than the species. The upright spikes carry many star-shaped flowers that open from the bottom upwards. In late spring it brings colour and height to borders and naturalistic meadows.

About this variety

Camassia comes from North America, where it grows in damp meadows. 'Zwanenburg' forms strong, upright spikes on which the blue stars open one after another. This makes flowering last several weeks. The foliage is narrow and strap-shaped and stays below the flowers. The spikes are densely set, so even a few plants make a clear impact. Unlike many bulbs, this variety copes well with heavy, rather damp soils and wet winters. This makes it particularly valuable and reliable for gardens on loam.

At about 70–90 cm, this variety suits the middle of the border and woodland edges. It follows daffodils and tulips and leads on to the early summer perennials. It combines beautifully with yellow euphorbias, white camassias or grasses. In a meadow, plant it in larger groups.

The flowers provide food for bees and bumblebees. The stems are suitable for the vase. In a suitable spot, camassia slowly multiplies and flowers for many years.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November about 10–15 cm deep and 15–20 cm apart, pointed end up. They look best set in groups. Sunny to partially shaded spots with moist soil are ideal; heavier soils are also tolerated.

Care

Let the foliage turn yellow after flowering before removing it. You can pinch off faded flowers unless you want the plant to naturalise. In a meadow, do not mow until the foliage has died back. Keep evenly moist while flowering.
