'Peach Blush' shows that canna lilies can be gentle too. Its flowers are a warm peach between pink and orange. They appear from June to October above broad foliage. At 140–160 cm tall, it is an elegant border plant for sunny spots.

About this variety

The name says a lot: 'Peach Blush' bears flowers in a soft peach that leans more towards pink or orange depending on the light. This makes the plant less loud than many other canna lilies, but no less exotic. The large green foliage frames the flowers calmly.

At about 140–160 cm tall, it belongs in the middle or back of the border. It is only partly suited to containers, as it needs a large, stable one. Combinations with apricot dahlias, bronze grasses or the blue contrast of agapanthus and sage are lovely.

In a vase the flower stems bring a warm tone to summer bouquets. Because flowering starts in June and lasts until October, 'Peach Blush' is one of the long-flowering varieties in the summer border. The plant grows upright and strong, with broad, fresh green leaves. If you start it off in March, you really will see the first flowers in June. It is a real asset in a border of pastel shades, because it adds warmth without dominating. In this way it links strong and delicate colours.

Planting

From March you can start the rhizomes off in pots of loose compost in a light, warm place indoors. Only move them outdoors after the Ice Saints (mid-May). Lay the rhizomes 5–8 cm deep with the shoot tips facing up, spacing them 40–60 cm apart. A warm, sheltered spot in full sun with fertile soil is ideal.

Care

Water generously in summer and feed every two weeks, as canna lilies are hungry plants. Cut off faded flower spikes so new ones follow. The plant is not hardy: after the first light frost, cut the foliage back to about 15 cm, lift the rhizomes and overwinter them dry and frost-free at 5–10 °C.
