  • Repeat-flowering from June to October
  • About 390–410 cm tall, 250 cm wide

A climbing rose you can tie in without gloves: 'Zéphirine Drouhin' has thornless shoots and strongly fragrant flowers in bright pink. This historic Bourbon rose flowers from June to October and grows about 4 m tall. Supplied bare root for planting in autumn or spring.

About this variety

The flowers of 'Zéphirine Drouhin' open from pale buds into double, slightly wavy cups in rich pink. They are about 8 cm across and have a strong, classic rose fragrance. The foliage is mid-green. The fact that the shoots carry no thorns makes it a favourite rose for many gardeners.

The rose climbs to about 390–410 cm and needs a trellis, an arch or a railing for this. It can also be pruned as a tall, loose hedge. Combine it with a white clematis, or with delphiniums and bellflowers at its feet. It does only moderately well in a large container; a spot in the ground is better.

The first flush in early summer is lavish, followed by more flowers until October. The thornless stems are particularly good for the vase, as they are pleasant to cut and arrange. So you can bring the fragrance of this old variety into the house all summer.

Planting

Bare-root roses are best planted from October to April in frost-free ground. Soak the roots for a few hours beforehand in a bucket of water. The graft union should sit about 5 cm below the soil, 30–40 cm away from the wall. Keep 175–250 cm from other plants, in a sunny spot with moist soil.

Care

Water in well during the first weeks after planting and keep the soil moist. Feed in spring and after the first flush. In spring, cut out dead wood and shorten the side shoots. Train long shoots as horizontally as possible to encourage more flowers. The rose is hardy even at higher altitudes in Switzerland.
