  • Densely double, spurless flowers like small pompons
  • Deep plum-violet that looks almost black
  • Flowers in May on stems of 60–80 cm
  • Blue-green, finely lobed foliage
  • Good cut flower for dark bouquets

'Black Barlow' is a double, spurless columbine whose flowers are such a dark plum-violet that they look almost black. The small pompons nod in May on slender stems above blue-green foliage. A perennial for lovers of dark colours, in the border as well as in the vase.

About this variety

The flowers of 'Black Barlow' have nothing in common with the classic columbine shape. Instead of long spurs, they carry densely layered, narrow petals arranged into small, symmetrical balls. Their colour is a deep plum-violet. Backlit it shows a bluish sheen; in shade it looks almost black.

At 60–80 cm tall, it suits the middle of the border or the woodland edge, in sun to partial shade. Pale partners bring out the dark violet: white columbines, silvery foliage, lady's mantle or the pale flowers of hardy geraniums. It is only of limited use in pots and is happier in the ground.

The long, sturdy stems make 'Black Barlow' a good cut flower for unusual, dark bouquets. Bumblebees and other insects visit the flowers in May. Columbines self-seed readily, but the seedlings may look different from the parent plant. After flowering, the finely divided foliage stays attractive for a long time and fills the gap until summer.

Planting

Plant in spring, from March to May, or in autumn, in September and October. Dig a planting hole twice the size of the root ball and set the plant so that the root collar sits just below the surface. Space plants 35–50 cm apart. A sunny to partially shaded spot with moist soil is ideal. Water in thoroughly.

Care

Water in dry weeks, especially in the first year. A dressing of compost in spring is enough. Columbines self-seed readily; if you do not want this, cut the stems after flowering before the seeds ripen. You can cut the foliage back to the ground in late summer if it becomes untidy.
