  • Lemon-yellow flowers with a deep red centre
  • Flowers from June to October
  • Compact, about 45–55 cm tall
  • Tolerates heat and drought
  • Rich in nectar, popular with bees

'Solar Moon' bears flowers in a soft lemon yellow with a deep red heart. From June to October this compact perennial flowers in great abundance. It tolerates heat and drought, and its mild colour also suits pastel shades.

About this variety

The Solar series includes compact, free-flowering coreopsis. 'Solar Moon' is its gentle member: the petals glow a pale moon yellow, with a deep red to chestnut-brown ring in the centre. The edges of the petals are finely notched, and the foliage forms a dense green clump.

Because the yellow is not garish, 'Solar Moon' can be combined in many ways. With blue and purple perennials such as speedwell or catmint it looks fresh; with pink yarrow it looks soft. At about 45–55 cm tall, it belongs at the front of the border, in groups or in containers on the terrace. A sunny spot produces the most flowers.

The plant is resistant to disease and copes with hot, dry weeks. The button-like centre is rich in nectar and attracts bees and other pollinators. Cutting back after the first peak of flowering extends the season into autumn. In the border the two-tone flowers look like little suns and stay attractive for a long time. In a pot on a balcony or terrace this compact perennial also brings plenty of colour. It is easy to care for and returns reliably every year.

Planting

Plant 'Solar Moon' from March to May or in September and October. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Make the planting hole twice the size of the root ball; set the root collar just below the surface. Space the plants 35–50 cm apart and water them in well.

Care

Water during long dry spells, and regularly in containers. A little compost in spring provides enough nutrients. Deadhead, or shorten the shoots after the first flowering, and the plant will flower again. Cut back to the ground in late winter.
