  • Cream starry flowers with a purple eye
  • Fine, wiry stems
  • Flowers from June to August
  • About 35–45 cm tall
  • Lovely cut flower for summer bouquets

Ixia 'Hogarth' bears numerous cream starry flowers with a purple eye on fine, wiry stems. The dainty panicles move gently in the wind. For sunny, dry spots, pots and colourful summer bouquets, the corn lily is a light, cheerful addition.

About this variety

The flowers of 'Hogarth' open into flat stars in the sun. Their cream verges on white, with a dark purple-violet eye at the centre. Many flowers stand one above another in upright panicles. The foliage is narrow and grass-like and stays in the background, so the flowers take centre stage.

At about 35–45 cm tall, 'Hogarth' belongs at the front of the border, in the rock garden or in pots. It looks best in groups of twenty or more corms. Good companions are lavender, catmint, ornamental grasses and other Ixia varieties in yellow or pink.

The panicles last a long time in the vase, and the buds open one by one. It has hardly any scent and is of little interest to pollinators. After flowering the foliage dies back and the corms go dormant. Overwintered dry, they will flower again the following year.

Planting

Start the corms off in pots indoors from March, or plant them directly outdoors after the Ice Saints (mid-May). Planting depth is 5–8 cm and spacing 8–10 cm. Ixia needs full sun and very free-draining, rather sandy soil. They look best in groups of ten or more.

Care

Water moderately during growth and avoid waterlogging. After flowering the soil may become drier until the foliage yellows. In autumn, before the frost, lift the corms and overwinter them dry and frost-free. In pots, simply move the pot to a dry, frost-free place.
