  • Pink trumpet flowers up to 15 cm
  • 8–10 flowers per stem
  • Fragrant, in July and August
  • About 70–90 cm tall
  • For borders, large containers and the vase

This crinum brings umbels of large, fragrant trumpet flowers in soft pink in high summer. Each flower reaches up to 15 cm, and a stem often carries eight to ten of them. The massive bulb returns every year and flowers more freely over time.

About this variety

Crinum × powellii is an old garden hybrid and one of the toughest in its genus. It forms a huge bulb with a long neck, from which long, arching leaves grow. In July and August sturdy stems appear with umbels of pink trumpets. The flowers are up to 15 cm across, open one by one and have a pleasant scent.

At 70–90 cm tall, the plant suits the middle of a sunny border, a cottage garden or a deep container. It looks exotic without seeming out of place, rather like a large lily. Lovely partners are blue agapanthus, catmint, white phlox or ornamental grasses that hide the base of the plant. It is especially happy in front of a sunny wall.

As a cut flower, a single stem brings scent and size to the vase. Insects also visit the flowers. If you leave the bulbs in the same place, they will return for many years, as they dislike disturbance and grow into strong clumps over time.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in spring, from April to May, so deep that the neck of the bulb just shows above the soil. Space them 35–50 cm apart. Choose a warm, sunny spot with fertile, well-drained soil. For large containers, a deep pot at least 30 cm across is suitable.

Care

Water regularly in summer and feed every two to three weeks until flowering. Leave the bulbs undisturbed; moving them delays flowering. In winter a thick layer of leaves covers the root area. In a container the plant overwinters frost-free.
