  • Large, glossy violet goblets
  • Large-flowered garden crocus of the Vernus group
  • Flowers in March
  • About 10–20 cm tall
  • For sun and partial shade, naturalises well

'Remembrance' is a large-flowered garden crocus with glossy violet goblets. In March the flowers open in the sun and create strong patches of colour in lawns and beds. The variety is robust, tolerates partial shade and returns reliably every year, looking better and better in larger groups.

About this variety

Large-flowered crocuses are the best-known heralds of spring in gardens and parks. 'Remembrance' is one of them and shows an even, glossy violet. The flowers are large and goblet-shaped. On sunny days they open wide and reveal their brightly coloured stigmas; in dull weather they stay closed.

At about 10–20 cm tall, the variety is ideal for lawns, the edges of beds and rock gardens. It tolerates sun and partial shade and also grows beneath shrubs that leaf out late. For a classic combination, plant it with white and yellow large-flowered crocuses. Daffodils and tulips follow later in spring. It also flowers well in pots and window boxes.

The large flowers offer early bees plenty of pollen. 'Remembrance' is hardy and naturalises in suitable spots, so the clumps become denser over the years. Mice are fond of crocus corms, however. Where voles are present, protect the corms with a wire basket.

Planting

Plant the corms from August to November, tip upwards, 5–8 cm deep and 5–8 cm apart. A sunny to partially shaded spot with free-draining soil is suitable. Plant in groups of at least ten corms, as single large crocuses look lost.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow so the corm can build up strength. In a lawn, wait to mow until the leaves have died back. Little other care is needed. Dense clumps can be divided after a few years.
