'Ruby Giant' is a vigorous crocus related to Crocus tommasinianus. Its star-shaped flowers glow in a strong, slightly reddish violet, a little paler inside, with orange anthers. It flowers from February, spreads by seed and corms, and soon forms dense carpets in lawns and rock gardens.

About this variety

The name promises a lot, and 'Ruby Giant' delivers. For a Crocus tommasinianus the flowers are large, in an even, strong violet with a reddish sheen. Inside the colour is slightly paler, creating a soft two-tone effect. Golden-orange anthers glow in the centre. In the sun the flowers open into wide stars.

At about 5–15 cm tall, it is made for large plantings in lawns, at the foot of deciduous shrubs and in rock gardens. It also flowers well in pots and window boxes. Yellow partners such as winter aconites, 'Romance' or early daffodils create a lovely contrast. The soil should be free-draining and rather poor; it dislikes too much fertiliser or wet.

The flowers provide early bees and bumblebees with pollen and nectar. 'Ruby Giant' is considered very vigorous and multiplies year after year. In the experience of many gardeners, mice and squirrels nibble it less than large-flowered crocuses, though it is not always spared. In dull weather the flowers stay closed.

Planting

Plant the corms from August to November, tip upwards, 5–8 cm deep and 5–8 cm apart. Choose a sunny spot with free-draining soil that is not too rich. Avoid waterlogging by loosening heavy soil with sand.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. In a lawn, wait to mow until the leaves have died back. Let the seeds ripen so the crocus can spread further. Dense clumps can be divided in late summer after a few years.
