  • Deep orange bells with a reddish undertone
  • Strong stems tinted copper brown
  • About 90–110 cm tall
  • Flowers in April and May, often a little earlier
  • Reliable, forms large clumps

'Orange Beauty' is a strong crown imperial with deep orange bells flushed with red. The thick stems are tinted copper brown, topped by a jaunty tuft of leaves. It is considered particularly reliable and forms large clumps over time.

About this variety

'Orange Beauty' is one of the newer forms of crown imperial. Its bells glow deep orange with a reddish sheen, with long, cream stamens hanging from them. The stems are strikingly coloured copper brown. At the top sits a tuft of glossy leaves that remains decorative even after flowering.

At about 90–110 cm tall, it is a strong vertical accent in the spring border. Underplant it with dark red or violet tulips, grape hyacinths or wallflowers. Later, perennials such as daylilies and coneflowers take over the space. In large containers it looks particularly impressive on terrace and balcony.

Bumblebees and bees like to visit the bells. Like all crown imperials it has a pungent smell that usually keeps voles and deer away. It is also suitable for a large vase. All parts of the plant are poisonous. Even a small group of three to five bulbs makes a clear statement in the garden. Because the variety is considered particularly reliable, the planting tends to grow stronger rather than weaker over the years and stays in the same place for a long time.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November. Lay them at an angle or on their side on a bed of sand so that no water stands in the hollow of the bulb. Plant them 10–20 cm deep and 15–30 cm apart. Choose a sunny spot with fertile, well-drained soil.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it yellows. In spring the plant appreciates compost, but avoid fresh manure. Wear gloves when planting. After a few years you can divide large clumps in late summer.
