  • Large red-orange bells
  • Arranged in a ring around the stem
  • About 90–110 cm tall
  • Flowers in April and May
  • Strong scent that voles tend to avoid

Crown imperial 'Rubra' carries a ring of large bells in warm red-orange beneath a crown of green leaves. On sturdy stems it grows to about 90–110 cm. A stately spring bloomer that brings depth and colour to the border.

About this variety

'Rubra' is the darkest of the crown imperials. Its large, hanging bells glow a rich red-orange and are arranged in a circle around the strong stem, topped by the typical tuft of green leaves. With the right care, a crown imperial can flower in the same spot for very many years.

At about 90–110 cm, it belongs at the back or in the middle of a sunny border. Yellow daffodils, blue grape hyacinths and dark tulips suit its warm colours. Later, perennials such as daylilies, coneflowers or bee balm take over the space and hide the dying foliage. It also feels at home in a cottage garden.

Bumblebees and bees visit the nectar-rich bells. Voles and deer usually avoid the plant because of its pungent smell. The stems work in a large vase, but because of the scent it looks best in the garden. All parts of crown imperials are poisonous. Plant three or four bulbs together.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November. Lay them at an angle or on their side on a bed of sand so that no water collects in the hollow. Plant 10–20 cm deep and 15–30 cm apart in a sunny spot. The soil should be rich, loose and well drained.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. In spring, give compost or horn shavings, but no fresh manure. Wear gloves when planting, as the bulbs are poisonous. After a few years you can divide large clumps in late summer.
