About this variety

A cutting garden of your own is a small luxury that takes little effort. This Deluxe mix contains various tulips in several colours that complement each other well. They make colourful bouquets without lengthy arranging, and every spring brings a selection of shapes and shades.

Ideally plant the bulbs in rows in a vegetable bed or a dedicated cutting corner, so cutting does not leave gaps in the bed. At 45–55 cm tall, they also suit the middle of the bed. Forget-me-nots or wallflowers complete the picture. The mix also does well in large pots. In front of a hedge or a pale wall, colour and form show especially well, as the calm background sets off the flowers.

Cut the tulips when the buds show colour but are still closed; this way they last longest in the vase. Tulips offer bees little. Flowering is strongest in the first year; for a cutting garden it is worth replanting every year.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from October to December. In Switzerland October to November is ideal; you can continue until December as long as the ground is not frozen. Planting depth 10–15 cm, tip upwards, spacing 10–12 cm. The spot should be sunny and the soil well drained; in heavy soil sprinkle some sand into the planting hole. In pots and window boxes the bulbs can sit close together.

Care

The plant appreciates water during dry spells in spring. Remove the seed heads after flowering, but leave the foliage until it has yellowed, as it feeds the bulb. If you want the same number of flowers every year, plant a few fresh bulbs in autumn or lift the old ones after the foliage dies back and store them dry. In gardens with voles, plant in a wire basket. Keep large containers sheltered from rain in winter.
