'Jack Snipe' is a dainty Cyclamineus daffodil with reflexed, creamy white petals and a yellow trumpet. It flowers early in March, is very robust and naturalises readily. A proven classic for pots and small gardens.

About this variety

Cyclamineus daffodils are recognisable by their swept-back petals, which recall a cyclamen. 'Jack Snipe' shows this form especially beautifully: creamy white petals frame a lemon to butter-yellow trumpet with a finely ruffled rim. The variety has been known since before 1951 and holds an award for garden merit. It flowers freely and early in the year.

At 20–30 cm tall, it is ideal for pots, window boxes, bed edges and small gardens. It naturalises readily in lawns and beneath trees and shrubs. Together with squills, grape hyacinths, crocuses or spring cyclamen, it creates charming pictures. In a bulb lasagne it forms an early middle layer.

The dainty flowers are suitable for small bouquets. 'Jack Snipe' flowers freely and returns year after year. Voles and deer avoid daffodils, as all parts are poisonous. Thanks to its low height, it hardly ever bends in wind and rain, which makes it interesting for exposed locations.

Planting

The best planting time is September to November. Set the bulbs 10–15 cm deep with the tip pointing upwards and keep them 10–15 cm apart. Daffodils grow in sun and partial shade; the soil should be loose and free-draining. The earlier you plant, the better the bulbs root.

Care

Remove faded flowers so that no energy goes into seed, but leave the foliage until it turns yellow. After a few years the clumps become dense; divide them in summer once the foliage has died back. All parts of the daffodil are poisonous. For mixed bouquets, stand freshly cut daffodils on their own first, as their sap makes other flowers wilt.
