'Sinopel' is a late, scented daffodil with a special feature: its small cup is green. Depending on the weather, it glows olive, yellow-green or green with a yellow rim against the ivory-white petals. A variety for naturalistic and romantic gardens that you will want to look at up close.

About this variety

Green is an unusual colour in daffodils, and 'Sinopel' carries it at the centre of its flower. Depending on the temperature, the small, flat cup is olive green, spring green or yellow-green, often with a fine yellow rim. In warmer weather the green usually becomes stronger. The ivory-white petals and blue-green foliage show its relationship to the Poeticus narcissus.

At around 45–55 cm tall, it suits cottage gardens, naturalistic beds and the woodland edge. As one of the last daffodils, it flowers together with late tulips, columbines and alliums. Green and white plantings with lady's mantle, hostas and white tulips show off its unusual eye particularly well. It is also pretty in pots.

In the vase it has a pleasant scent, and the green centre is a talking point. Voles and deer mostly avoid daffodils. With four bulbs you can add a small accent or try out the variety before naturalising it in larger numbers.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December with the tip pointing upwards, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. A sunny to partially shaded spot with free-draining, rather neutral soil is ideal. Plant the four bulbs close together to form a small clump. Avoid waterlogging.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow, so that the bulb gathers strength for next year. In a lawn, only mow once the foliage has died back. You can divide dense clumps in summer after a few years. Daffodils are poisonous, and their sap harms other cut flowers, so stand freshly cut stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
