  • Soft pink flowers with bands or veins in stronger pink
  • Flower diameter about 10 cm
  • Compact, around 60–80 cm tall
  • Flowers freely from July to October
  • Dark stems, lovely as a cut flower

'Pacific Jewel' looks gentle yet is full of strength. The soft pink flowers with darker pink tones reach about 10 cm and stand on strong, dark stems. At around 60–80 cm the plant stays compact and produces plenty of flowers for borders, pots and the vase from July to October.

About this variety

The colour of 'Pacific Jewel' is quiet: a pale, almost whitish pink, shot through with bands or veins of stronger pink. Towards the centre there is often a hint of yellow. The flowers, about 10 cm across, sit on dark, sturdy stems that contrast attractively with the pale colours. The overall effect is delicate and refined.

At around 60–80 cm tall the variety belongs at the front or in the middle of the border, ideally in small groups. It goes with violet, blue, wine red and fresh green; a small touch of orange livens up the pastel tones further. Thanks to its compact habit it is also well suited to pots and containers on a patio.

In the cutting garden the variety shows what it can do. It keeps forming new buds for months, so you can make small bouquets again and again. The flowers last well in the vase. Bees and butterflies also like to visit the plant, especially on warm late-summer days.

Planting

Plant the tubers outdoors from mid-May, after the Ice Saints, about 10–15 cm deep and 40–60 cm apart. For earlier flowers, start them in pots indoors from March. A sunny spot with moist, well-drained soil is ideal. Loam, sand or clay soil are suitable, but waterlogging is not.

Care

Keep the soil evenly moist without soaking it. A flower fertiliser every few weeks from June encourages new buds. Remove faded flowers regularly, cutting just above the next pair of leaves. After the first frost, lift the tubers, let them dry and store them somewhere cool and frost-free.
