  • Around 90–110 cm tall, 60 cm wide
  • Keeps its colour and shape in the vase

'Wine Eyed Jill' looks as if it had been painted: the pink flowers, around 8 cm across, have a dark wine-red centre from which the colour fades to soft pastel tones. This decorative dahlia flowers from July to October and is a delicate cut flower for anyone who loves subtle colours.

About this variety

The eye makes all the difference. At the centre of each flower sits a dark wine-red blotch, from which the tightly cupped petals fade to pale pink. At about 8 cm across, the flowers are a handy size and very regularly formed. The tones shift slightly over the season, so the picture never becomes dull.

In the border, 'Wine Eyed Jill' reaches around 90–110 cm tall and 60 cm wide. It suits the middle of a border, together with catmint, baby's breath or blue salvia. Dark-leaved plants such as heuchera also bring out the wine-red centre. It does well in a large pot in a sunny spot too.

The variety is ideal for bouquets, as the flowers keep their shape and colour in the vase. They combine with pastel shades as well as with strong burgundy. The more often you cut, the more new flowers the plant produces. Bees and bumblebees find food on it until the first frost.

Planting

Plant the tubers outdoors after the Ice Saints, from mid-May. If you want flowers earlier, start them indoors from March. The planting depth is 10–15 cm and the spacing 40–60 cm. A sunny spot with moist, well-drained soil is ideal.

Care

Water regularly, especially in dry weather, but avoid waterlogging. One feed a month in summer is usually enough. A support stake helps in windy spots. Remove faded flowers so that the plant keeps forming buds. After the first frost, lift the tubers, let them dry and store them somewhere frost-free over winter.
