'Apeldoorn' is probably the best-known red garden tulip. This Darwin hybrid carries very large, bright scarlet flowers with a dark centre on tall, strong stems. Weather-resistant and long-lived, it often returns for many years.

About this variety

The flowers of 'Apeldoorn' are large and classically shaped, in a bright red with a cherry tinge. When they open in the sun, they reveal a dark, almost black centre with black stamens, often edged in yellow. This contrast has made the variety so popular for decades.

At 50–60 cm it belongs in the middle or towards the back of the border, at the woodland edge and in wildlife gardens. The very strong stems withstand wind and rain. For a classic spring display, combine it with yellow daffodils or blue grape hyacinths. With white tulips, too, the red looks clear and festive. In a large container it forms the top layer of a bulb lasagne.

It lasts well in the vase and makes a classic red bouquet. It is of little interest to pollinators. As a Darwin hybrid, 'Apeldoorn' is one of the most perennial tulips of all and, in a sunny spot, often flowers again for many years.

Planting

Plant the bulbs between September and December, ideally in October and November. Set them 10–15 cm deep, tip upwards, 10–12 cm apart, in groups of 10 or more. A sunny spot with free-draining soil and no waterlogging is ideal; improve heavy soil with sand. Plant more closely in large containers.

Care

Water in dry spring weeks. Deadhead and leave the foliage until it turns yellow. The bulbs stay in the ground; a dose of bulb fertiliser in autumn and after flowering helps them return. A planting basket protects against voles. Protect pots from persistent wet in winter.
