  • Very large, chalice-shaped flowers
  • Shades of pink from deep to pale
  • Black base with a fine yellow edge
  • Flowers April to May, 45–55 cm tall
  • Weather-resistant and perennial as a Darwin hybrid

'Pink Impression' is a Darwin hybrid tulip with very large, chalice-shaped flowers. Its pink ranges from deep rosé in the centre to pale pink at the edge, with a black base inside. The strong stems defy wind and rain, and the bulbs return for years.

About this variety

The flowers of 'Pink Impression' are the size of a fist and elegantly shaped. They glow in shades of pink that shift from a rich rosé in the centre to a delicate pale pink at the edges. Sometimes a hint of melon or salmon mixes in. When the flower opens, it shows a black base inside, narrowly edged in yellow.

'Pink Impression' makes its strongest impact in large groups in the bed. It grows 45–55 cm tall and stays upright even after rain thanks to its strong stems. White tulips, lilac alliums and forget-me-nots are lovely companions. In large containers, plant the bulbs densely for a full effect. Planted in loose clumps rather than strict rows, it creates a more natural picture reminiscent of a cottage garden.

It is ideal as a cut flower: large flowers, long vase life, sturdy stem. Bees seldom visit tulips. As a Darwin hybrid it is long-lived and flowers for several years in a sunny, free-draining spot. Tulips keep growing a few centimetres in the vase and lean towards the light, which gives every bouquet a lively shape.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December. In Switzerland October to November is ideal; you can continue until December as long as the ground is not frozen. Planting depth 10–15 cm, tip upwards, spacing 10–12 cm. The spot should be sunny and the soil well drained; in heavy soil sprinkle some sand into the planting hole. In pots and window boxes the bulbs can sit close together.

Care

After the shoots appear, water only during dry spells. Cut off wilted flowers before seed forms and wait until the foliage is yellow before removing it. The bulbs can stay in the soil; for an even display, replant or lift them after the foliage dies back and store them dry over the summer. A planting basket keeps voles away. In pots, protect from constant wet in winter.
