  • Very large goblets of around 12 cm
  • Salmon pink with a paler edge
  • Colour moves from apricot to strong pink
  • Height 50–60 cm, strong stems
  • Darwin hybrid, often returns for years

'Salmon Impression' is a tall Darwin hybrid tulip with very large, goblet-shaped flowers in salmon pink, paler towards the edge. The flowers last up to three weeks. Strong, reliable and long-lived, it is one of the most popular tulips for border and vase.

About this variety

The flowers of 'Salmon Impression' are huge and a classic goblet shape. Their colour is a warm salmon pink that becomes paler towards the edges. When opening they still show a hint of apricot, and over time the pink becomes stronger. This makes a group look lively, with several shades side by side.

At 50–60 cm tall, it belongs in the middle or at the back of the border, at the woodland edge or in a wildlife garden. The strong stems also withstand wind. Lovely partners are white tulips, blue forget-me-nots and grape hyacinths, or the fresh foliage of hostas. In a large container, it forms the top layer of a bulb lasagne above crocuses.

In the vase the large flowers are an event and last a long time. It is not very attractive to pollinators. As a Darwin hybrid, 'Salmon Impression' is one of the longest-lived garden tulips and often flowers again for many years in a sunny spot.

Planting

Plant the bulbs between September and December, ideally in October and November, once the soil has cooled. Plant them 10–15 cm deep, tip upwards, 10–12 cm apart and in groups of 10 or more. A sunny spot with free-draining soil and no waterlogging is ideal; improve heavy soil with sand. In pots, plant more closely.

Care

Water during dry weeks in spring. Pinch off faded flowers and leave the foliage until it turns yellow. The bulbs can stay in the ground and come up again every year. A planting basket protects against voles. Protect large containers from persistent wet in winter.
