  • Double red flowers, around 13 cm across
  • Yellow throat as a warm contrast
  • Awarded best double daylily
  • Flowering in July
  • About 50–70 cm tall, for sun and partial shade

'Highland Lord' is a double daylily with large red flowers and a glowing yellow throat at the centre. Double varieties are rare among daylilies and look particularly lush. It has been awarded best double daylily and brings strong colour to the border in July.

About this variety

In 'Highland Lord', several layers of red petals sit on top of one another. The result is a full, almost peony-like flower around 13 cm across. Towards the centre the red turns into a yellow throat that makes the flower glow from within. The variety received an award from the American daylily society as the best double daylily. Each flower lasts a day, but plenty of buds keep the display going through July.

At about 50–70 cm tall, the variety suits the front and middle of a border. It grows in sun and partial shade and in almost any moist soil, from sand to clay. Good companions are blue speedwell, yellow tickseed or bronze grasses. At the woodland edge and in naturalistic planting, the red adds a clear accent.

Butterflies and bees visit the flowers. Stems in bud last several days in a vase. The mid-green foliage forms a dense clump that leaves little room for weeds. With three plants you quickly get a small group that grows stronger year after year. Daylilies are long-lived and can stay in the same spot for a long time.

Planting

The best planting time is spring, from March to May, or alternatively September and October. Loosen the soil and dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. The shoot buds go 2–3 cm below the surface, with a spacing of 40–50 cm. Water in well afterwards.

Care

In the first year the plant needs regular watering in dry weeks, later hardly at all. Spread a little compost around the clump in spring. Remove spent stems at the base. If the clump becomes too dense, divide it after a few years.
