  • Double decorative dahlia in yellow and red
  • Flowers from July to October
  • About 90–110 cm tall and 60 cm wide
  • Sun to partial shade
  • Good cut flower, also suitable for large containers

'Firefighter' is a decorative dahlia in yellow and red whose double flowers look like small flames. It grows to about 90–110 cm and flowers from July to October. An eye-catcher in the bed and a rewarding cut flower.

About this variety

Yellow and red in one flower: 'Firefighter' provides warm colours when summer reaches its peak. The decorative flowers are well filled and have broad petals on which the two colours blend. Depending on the flower, either yellow or red dominates, so the plant looks lively and varied. The name says it all: this dahlia glows like a fire.

At around 90–110 cm tall, it belongs in the middle of the bed. It tolerates sun and partial shade. Suitable partners are sneezeweed, rudbeckias, orange daylilies or purple fountain grass. It also looks good in a large container by the seating area. Plant two or three tubers together and the group looks like a warm patch of colour that draws the eye.

In the vase it brings warmth into the house, especially in late summer with grasses and rose hips. Cut freely and new flowers will follow into October. Bees visit it when the centre opens. The double flowers last several days in fresh water. Change the water every two days and recut the stems at a slight angle.

Planting

Plant the tubers from mid-May, after the Ice Saints, 10–15 cm deep and 40–60 cm apart. Starting them indoors from March is possible. Sun or light partial shade is suitable. The soil should be loamy or sandy, moist and well drained.

Care

Water evenly and do not let waterlogging develop. Feed regularly from June to August. A support stake keeps the heavy flowers upright in rain. After the first frost, lift the tubers and overwinter them cool and frost-free.
