'Pure White' brings pure white flower spikes to the summer border. This delphinium from the compact Magic Fountains series grows about 80–100 cm tall and stands up better than tall varieties. It flowers freely in June and July, ideal for white gardens and bouquets.

About this variety

White delphiniums look refined and glow even at dusk. 'Pure White' carries densely packed spikes of semi-double, snow-white flowers above finely cut green foliage. Thanks to the compact habit of the series, the stems stay upright, even in slightly windier spots.

In the garden it sets vertical lines in the middle of the border or at the back of smaller borders. At about 80–100 cm tall, it goes well with roses, foxgloves, bellflowers and hardy geraniums. In white gardens it combines beautifully with silver foliage and baby's breath. It needs sun and fertile, moist soil.

In the vase the flower stems last several days and give bouquets height. Bumblebees like to visit the flowers. Cut back after the first flush, and the plant often forms new flower spikes in late summer. With good care the delphinium will stay for many years. The pure white glows especially at dusk and suits almost any colour in the border. Next to blue delphiniums or pink peonies it creates a classic, fresh cottage garden picture.

Planting

Plant 'Pure White' in spring from March to May or in autumn in September and October. Choose a sunny spot with humus-rich, free-draining soil. The planting hole should be twice the size of the root ball; set the shoot buds just below the surface. Plant 40–50 cm apart and water in.

Care

Keep the soil evenly moist and feed with compost in spring. Slugs love young shoots, so protect them early. Cut back close to the ground after flowering to encourage a second flush. All parts of the plant are toxic; wear gloves when working with it.
