  • Densely double flowers about 10 cm across
  • Golden yellow with orange inner petals
  • Wavy petal edges
  • Flowers in April
  • Compact, about 30–40 cm tall

'Apotheose' bears large, densely double flowers about 10 cm across in which golden-yellow and orange petals mingle. The flowers look lush and warm, almost like small peonies. In April it is an eye-catcher in the border, and it lasts a long time in the vase.

About this variety

The flowers of 'Apotheose' are made up of many layers. The outer petals are strong golden yellow, and orange segments with ruffled edges push in between them on the inside. This creates a warm, lively play of colour. At around 10 cm across it is one of the large double daffodils, and the flowers look full and round.

At about 30–40 cm tall it suits groups in beds, borders and large containers. Its warm colours go with blue hyacinths, violet tulips or the first leaves of hostas and daylilies. In a bulb lasagne in a pot it shows well above grape hyacinths. Plant it in groups of ten or more.

As a cut flower 'Apotheose' lasts a long time and brings a luxurious touch to spring bouquets. The bulbs form clumps over the years and return reliably. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. The double flowers are hardly accessible to bees.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to November. They go 10–15 cm deep into the soil, 10–15 cm apart and with the tip upwards. Choose a sunny or partly shaded spot and free-draining soil. A sheltered position helps the heavy flowers.

Care

Pinch off faded flowers, but leave the foliage until it has yellowed. This lets the bulb build up reserves for next year. In rain the heavy flowers sometimes bend, so a sheltered spot helps. Divide dense clumps after a few years. In the vase, daffodils release a slime that harms other flowers, so stand the stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
