  • Double flowers of about 10 cm, gardenia-like
  • Creamy white, the yellowish centre turns white
  • Scented, flowers from March to May
  • Strong stems, height about 45–55 cm
  • Long-lasting in the vase

'Obdam' forms densely double, creamy white flowers that recall gardenias. The centre glows soft yellow as it opens and then lightens to pure white. It also has a pleasant scent and a long flowering period from March to May.

About this variety

Double daffodils are for lovers of lush forms, and 'Obdam' is one of the loveliest white examples. Many layers of slightly wavy petals form a round flower of about 10 cm. Young flowers have a hint of yellow at the centre, which fades over time until the whole flower is snow white. Sometimes a fine green sheen shows on the outer ring.

At around 45–55 cm tall and with strong stems, 'Obdam' holds its heavy flowers upright. Plant it in small groups in the bed, along the woodland edge or in pots and window boxes. Blue grape hyacinths, purple hyacinths or the fresh leaves of hostas make a lovely frame. Next to yellow daffodils it looks bright and calm.

Indoors, 'Obdam' really shows its strengths: the flowers last a long time and give off a delicate scent. A bunch of just a few stems is enough. Voles and deer mostly avoid daffodils, and in the right spot the variety returns year after year.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December with the tip pointing upwards, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. A sunny to partially shaded spot with free-draining, moist soil is ideal. Double varieties appreciate a position sheltered from wind, where the flowers are not weighed down by rain. Set five to seven bulbs together, which looks more natural than a row.

Care

Pinch off faded flowers, but leave the foliage until it turns yellow. This is how the bulb gathers strength for the next flowering. After a few years you can divide dense clumps in summer. Daffodils are poisonous, and their sap makes other flowers in the vase wilt faster, so stand cut stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
