'Rip van Winkle' is a small and very unusual daffodil. Its flowers consist of many narrow yellow petals and look like a little star or a ball of feathers. This old variety, known before 1884, grows only about 15–25 cm tall and is ideal for rock gardens and pots.

About this variety

People seeing 'Rip van Winkle' for the first time often ask whether it really is a daffodil. Instead of a trumpet, it bears a densely double flower of many narrow, pointed petals arranged in rings, some of them slightly twisted. The colour is a bright golden yellow, sometimes with a green sheen. The variety is also known as 'Plenus' and has been planted in gardens for over 130 years.

At around 15–25 cm tall, it belongs at the front of a bed, in rock gardens, pots, boxes and on sunny windowsills. It can naturalise in a lawn. Blue grape hyacinths, dwarf irises or small species tulips go well with it. In a bowl by the front door it draws attention.

The flowers are also pretty in small vases. Voles and deer mostly avoid daffodils. 'Rip van Winkle' is robust and returns every year. With its history and extraordinary flower shape, it also makes a lovely gift for people who enjoy discovering new things in the garden.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December with the tip pointing upwards, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. A sunny to partially shaded spot with free-draining soil is ideal. In pots, set the bulbs a little closer together. Make sure drainage is good.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow; in a lawn, only mow after that. You can divide dense clumps after a few years. Daffodils are poisonous, and their sap harms other cut flowers, so stand freshly cut stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
