  • Heritage variety from 1923

'Cheerfulness' is a double daffodil dating from 1923. Several creamy-white flowers like small gardenias open on each stem, flecked with yellow in the centre. It has a sweet, slightly musky scent, flowers later than most daffodils and is very sturdy.

About this variety

Since 1923, 'Cheerfulness' has been one of the classic scented daffodils. Its flowers are small, double and reminiscent of gardenias. The creamy-white petals are flecked with yellow in the centre. Each stem usually carries two to four flowers. The scent is sweet with a subtle musky note and can be noticed from some distance.

At about 35–45 cm tall and with very strong stems, it stands up to wind and rain. Plant it in groups in borders, cottage gardens, at the woodland edge or in pots on the terrace. A spot by a path lets you enjoy the scent as you pass. Together with its yellow sister 'Yellow Cheerfulness' or with blue grape hyacinths, it creates a harmonious picture.

In the vase, 'Cheerfulness' lasts a long time and smells lovely. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. The variety is long-lived and flowers reliably for many years.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December, tip upwards, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. A sunny to partly shaded spot with well-drained soil is ideal. To enjoy the scent, plant them near paths and seating areas. Plant at least seven bulbs together.

Care

Snip off faded flowers so the plant does not put energy into seed. Leave the foliage until it yellows, as it prepares next year's flowers. You can divide dense clumps after a few years. Daffodils are poisonous and their sap harms other cut flowers, so stand freshly cut stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
