  • Large double flowers of about 9 cm
  • White to cream with a pale yellow centre
  • Sweet scent
  • Flowers in April, height about 35–45 cm
  • Strong, weather-resistant stems

'White Lion' is a double daffodil with large, lavish flowers. Layers of white to cream petals mix with pale yellow segments in the centre. It has a sweet scent, and its sturdy stems hold the heavy flowers even in bad weather.

About this variety

'White Lion' is an old double variety that has won several awards. Its flowers reach about 9 cm across. White to cream petals are layered on top of each other, with pale yellow inner segments glowing between them. The result is reminiscent of a gardenia and smells sweet. The stems are strong, so the flowers stay upright even after rain.

At about 35–45 cm tall, it suits borders, group plantings, the woodland edge and large containers. It pairs well with later tulips and grape hyacinths. Planted along a path, it is easiest to see and smell. Against dark foliage, such as that of heuchera, its pale colour makes an elegant contrast.

'White Lion' is very popular as a cut flower; a bouquet of just a few stems already looks lavish. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. This robust variety returns year after year. Over time, strong clumps develop from which you can cut more and more stems for the vase each spring without the bed looking empty.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December, tip upwards, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. A sunny to partly shaded spot with well-drained, moist soil is ideal. A slightly sheltered position protects the double flowers. Plant in groups of seven to ten bulbs.

Care

Snip off faded flowers so the plant does not put energy into seed. Leave the foliage until it yellows, as it prepares next year's flowers. You can divide dense clumps after a few years. Daffodils are poisonous and their sap harms other cut flowers, so stand freshly cut stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
