  • Double, peony-like flowers
  • Violet purple with a bluish gloss
  • Colour looks different in sun and shade
  • Late flowering in May, height about 45–55 cm
  • Long-lasting, lovely with lilac in the vase

'Blue Spectacle' forms large, double flowers in the style of a peony, in violet purple with a bluish gloss. The colour seems to change between sun and shade and becomes paler as it matures. On strong stems it flowers late, in May, and is ideal for lavish bouquets.

About this variety

In 'Blue Spectacle' the double peony form meets a rare colour. The large flowers are violet to purple with a distinct blue sheen. Depending on the light they look cooler or warmer. Fully open, they reveal a pale base, and over time the colour fades gently.

At about 45–55 cm it suits beds and borders, where it looks particularly fresh with white or soft pink tulips. It also looks good next to forget-me-nots and grasses. In a large container the heavy flowers show to advantage; the stems sometimes bend slightly, which looks natural. For a natural-looking planting, set groups of 15 to 20 bulbs among low cushion perennials that hide the foliage after flowering.

Cut, it lasts well and goes beautifully with lilac, which flowers at the same time. Bees find little in the double flower. As with other double garden tulips, the first year is the best; replanting keeps the planting full.

Planting

Ideally plant in October or November; planting is possible from September to December, as long as the ground is not frozen. The planting depth is 10–15 cm, about three times the height of the bulb, with the tip pointing up. Keep 10–12 cm between bulbs and plant clumps of 10 or more rather than single rows. Tulips do not tolerate waterlogging: lighten heavy soil with sand or fine grit. In large containers plant more closely, almost bulb to bulb.

Care

The bulbs need little care: watering is only necessary in dry spring weeks. Cut off the spent heads so no seed ripens, and wait until the foliage has died back. The bulbs can stay in the ground; since garden tulips flower best in their first year, it is worth replanting or lifting the bulbs once the foliage has died back and storing them dry. In gardens with voles a planting basket is worthwhile. In pots, protect the bulbs from standing wet over winter.
