  • Double white flowers with red stripes
  • Foliage with an ivory-white edge
  • Moderate scent
  • Flowers April to May, height about 45–55 cm
  • Strong stems, a festive cut flower

'Carnaval de Nice' is a celebration in the garden: the double, almost round flowers are white, marked with raspberry-red flames and stripes like candy canes. The foliage has an ivory-white edge. This late tulip is pleasantly scented and bridges the gap to summer.

About this variety

In 'Carnaval de Nice' the name fits. The densely double flowers are almost round like peonies and pure white, overlaid with strong raspberry-red flames and stripes. No two flowers are alike. A second feature is the foliage, edged with a narrow ivory-white band, which decorates the plant even before flowering.

At about 45–55 cm it belongs in beds and borders, and also in rock gardens or large containers on the terrace. White and red tulips pick up its colours; forget-me-nots, silvery foliage or white rockcress form a calm frame. As it flowers late, it also goes well with early alliums. In a bulb lasagne it forms the late layer.

In spring bouquets it is a festive eye-catcher and brings a pleasant scent. The double flowers are of little interest to bees. Double late tulips flower best in their first year; for good flowering the following year, it is worth lifting the bulbs once the foliage has died back or planting more.

Planting

Ideally plant in October or November; planting is possible from September to December, as long as the ground is not frozen. The planting depth is 10–15 cm, about three times the height of the bulb, with the tip pointing up. Keep 10–12 cm between bulbs and plant clumps of 10 or more rather than single rows. Tulips do not tolerate waterlogging: lighten heavy soil with sand or fine grit. In large containers plant more closely, almost bulb to bulb.

Care

The bulbs need little care: watering is only necessary in dry spring weeks. Cut off the spent heads so no seed ripens, and wait until the foliage has died back. The bulbs can stay in the ground; since garden tulips flower best in their first year, it is worth replanting or lifting the bulbs once the foliage has died back and storing them dry. In gardens with voles a planting basket is worthwhile. In pots, protect the bulbs from standing wet over winter.
