  • Several double flowers on one stem
  • White heart, outer petals pink to magenta
  • Flowers in May
  • Height about 35–45 cm
  • 15 bulbs for beds, large containers and bouquets

'Double Surprise' is a multi-flowered double late tulip: one stem often carries several flowers at once. The centre is white, the outer petals feathered pink to magenta. A few bulbs create a dense, calm peony look in May.

About this variety

'Double Surprise' lives up to its name: instead of a single flower, one stem often bears several, each densely double like a small peony. The inside stays light and white, while the outer petals are feathered with pink that can deepen to magenta towards the edge. The colour play looks soft and balanced.

At about 35–45 cm the variety stays compact and suits the front of beds and borders. Combine it with blue forget-me-nots, white candytuft or early hardy geraniums. In pots its bouquet-like character comes into its own, as the top layer above grape hyacinths in a bulb lasagne.

A single cut stem already makes a small bouquet. The double flowers are of little interest to pollinators. Like many garden tulips, 'Double Surprise' flowers most richly in the first year; afterwards the number of flowers often declines, and topping up in autumn keeps the planting full.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December, ideally in October and November once the soil has cooled. Set them 10–15 cm deep with the tip pointing up, 10–12 cm apart. Groups of 10 or more look best. Choose a sunny spot with free-draining soil and no waterlogging; loosen heavy soil with sand or grit in the planting hole. In pots the bulbs can sit closer together.

Care

Water in spring if it stays dry for a while. Pinch off faded flowers so the plant does not put its energy into seed, and leave the foliage until it turns yellow. The bulbs can stay in the ground; for a full display every year, add a few new bulbs in autumn or lift them once the leaves have died back and store them dry. A planting basket protects against voles. In winter, keep pots somewhere sheltered from constant wet.
